Since the invention of watches, the watch industry has literally been growing in an exponential manner. Day by day, the watches are becoming smarter and more convenient. The latest progress has lead to the invention of solar watches. These watches are becoming increasingly popular because of their long durability and the fact that the batteries don’t ever have to be replaced! The best solar watches can be powered by all wavelengths of lights and have a very efficient power saving function. Moreover, the batteries can go months without being charged or getting any kind of illumination.

A Brief History of Solar Watches

Well, this smart concept of solar watches come from an incredibly long time ago- 1500 B.C.! At that time, sundials were well-known and were the best means for telling time, and that too using sunlight. However, since the technology wasn’t advanced at all, the sundials couldn’t store the Sun’s energy; thus, the sundials couldn’t function at night. Other than that, people also had to set their time every single day. At noon, when the Sun is directly above, everybody set the time to 12.

With time, different kinds of watches were developing but the sundials stayed more or less the same. After a long time, in the mid-19th century, the solar watches which we now see came to the market, thanks to the invention of photovoltaic cells a few years earlier.

Quartz was already used to manufacture watches, and the watch owners decided to take a further step. It all started when the first solar watch was invented by Roger W Riehl; it was called the Synchronar and had solar cells on top of it with an LED view of the time on the side.  This was a huge revolution in the watch industry, and almost all watch owners then started making their own solar watches.

The first solar watches were really blunt and not that eye-catching. To receive enough sunlight the solar cells had to be placed over the dial, making the inner designs of all watches unattractive.  With the progression of technology, the dials were designed to let light pass through. This was a great innovation as the solar cells could now be put beneath the dial, and the owners could design the watches just like the normal quartz watches making them more attractive and nice-looking.

People are still looking to develop the solar watches and make these more efficient and desirable; since these uses renewable energy and are environment-friendly.

How Solar Watches Work

The basic way of functioning of the solar watches is the same as all the other normal quartz watches. The main difference is that solar watches use photovoltaic cells (also called solar cells) and receive energy from the Sun to charge the battery. On the other hand, the normal quartz watches contain batteries that can’t be recharged and have to be replaced. The solar watches also contain quartz crystals and dials just like general watches.

There are two or three layers in a solar watch. The topmost layer is the crystal. Usually, the dial lies just beneath it and then comes the solar panel. But, sometimes, the dial is placed on the solar panel too.  The solar panel contains the solar cells, which carry out the main task for a solar watch- the conversion of light energy to electrical energy. When the watch comes in contact with light, the light passes through the crystal and the dial to reach the solar cells. The photons cause the electrons of a particular cell to be excited and jump out of the cell. That electron becomes free to move and moves to the next cell.

All the cells do have a deficit of electrons, except for the cell connected to a wire; therefore, the electron which started moving freely, passes through the cells and eventually reaches the wire. This keeps on happening as long as the watch is receiving light.

The wire is connected to rechargeable batteries. The electrons carry charges, so electricity generates when they flow. These pass through the wires and recharge the batteries. The batteries are special- they can store charge, and also work at the same time. They send electrical impulses to the quartz crystal by the means of a circuit. This causes the crystal to vibrate at a specific rate, and the circuit is designed particularly to count the number of oscillations of the crystal in one second.

Because the crystal oscillates at a specific rate, the hands of the clock are always in constant motion. Using this rate of oscillation as a stimulus, electrical impulses are created which can power an electric motor that turns the hands of the analog watches. These impulses also play the part in showing the time on the screen of the digital watches.

A very complicated mechanism for such a small object isn’t it? Well, that’s one of the reasons why these watches are so unique and amazing!

Why Use Solar Watch?

Why use a solar watch, you ask? I say, why not?! Solar watches are easily available and affordable. Using solar power makes our life a lot easier. Solar watches have the exact same functions as all the other normal watches, but it’s much more convenient to use.

  1. Firstly, these watches have solar panels which convert solar energy into electrical energy which is used to power the batteries.
  2. The batteries are rechargeable. Which means, the batteries control the activities in the watch and at the same time, they store enough charge to constantly keep working even in the absence of light. Therefore, you never have to replace your batteries, because they’re always recharging and will never die! This is why solar watches are so convenient. Also, not needing to replace the batteries save a lot of money!
  3. Solar watches are environment-friendly. These watches use the Sun’s light energy to recharge the batteries which will never run out. Greenhouse gases or toxic gases aren’t produced either, so it doesn’t affect the environment at all.
  4. They are found in various shapes and sizes, different designs and in a wide range of prices. After purchasing, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll have to spend any more on the watch (unless you break it!).

Are Solar Watches Reliable?

Solar technology has progressed a great deal in the past few years. The storing capability of the solar panels is increasing day by day, along with the effectiveness of the photovoltaic cells. In fact, some watches have been produced which can go on for years without charging! More numbers of solar cells can be managed in a solar panel compared to before, thus making the solar panels recharge the batteries at a faster rate.

Even though they are called SOLAR watches, they don’t necessarily require sunlight to charge. In the recent years, solar cells have been upgraded to receive any wavelengths of light and charge up just as efficiently as the light from the Sun. This has been a huge step forward since it has also made solar watches incredibly popular in countries with very low levels of sunlight. The only time they don’t charge is in the absence of light.

Solar-powered watches are made by the most renowned brands, like Casio, Seiko, G-Shock. They produce the best solar powered watches. So the fact that the well-known watch companies manufacture these solar watches increases the trustworthiness of the watches.

Along with the top quality of the watches, you’ll also be given guarantees and refund policies. This will turn out to be very helpful if something seems wrong with your watch!

Automatic watches vs Kinetic watches vs Solar watches

Scientists have made the functioning of watches more efficient over the years. One important breakthrough was inventing watches whose battery would never have to be changed! There are multiple ways in which that can be achieved, using rechargeable batteries. The Automatic watches, Kinetic watches, and Solar watches are all in this category.

Automatic watches have a pretty unique mechanism. They’re also called self-winding watches. These have a twisted spring inside, called a mainspring, connected to the hands of the watch. Automatic watches work using the movement of the person wearing it. There’s an internal rotor in every automatic watch, and when the person moves, the rotor spins. This spinning transfers energy to the mainspring and the mainspring starts winding which keeps the watch ticking.

Solar watches work by using light energy, and converting that into electrical energy, as you read earlier.

Kinetic watches are like a hybrid of the automatic and solar watches. These were invented by Seiko. Due to user’s movements, there’s a rotor inside the kinetic watch which starts to spin.

This movement energy (kinetic energy) of the rotor is converted to electrical energy inside the watch and is stored in a capacitor. The capacitor slowly discharges the energy, and powers the hands of the watch just like in the quartz watches. The watch companies try to put in the best attributes of the solar watches and the automatic watches and produce a high-functioning kinetic watch!

The common advantage of all these watches is that the batteries don’t have to be replaced at all, or at least not for many years. This is highly convenient for most users, and replacing batteries is time-consuming and expensive too.

Automatic watches are mainly luxury watches, and they’re pretty expensive. The mechanism of these watches is pretty cool and exceptional. However, if they aren’t subjected to any motion for a long time, they’ll stop working.

Unlike automatic watches, kinetic watches are comparably more efficient. They’re more accurate than automatic watches and won’t die away if not worn for some time. That’s because, the charge is stored in the capacitors which can keep them running for some time, even without movement.

You have read the perks of using solar watches above. Well, in my opinion, solar watches are more superior to both kinetic and automatic watches. Solar watches are very accurate too like kinetic watches. Then again, unlike the other two, solar watches won’t be affected even if they aren’t used for years together.

They can charge in sunlight as well as artificial light and has an enormous storage capacity. The watches can go on for months. Solar watches aren’t really expensive and don’t affect the environment badly either.

How to charge a solar watch without Sun?

Sunlight isn’t available 24/7! So, what do you do when you need to recharge your solar watch, but it’s raining outside or there’s not even a glimpse of sunlight? Nowadays, most of the watch companies are manufacturing watches which can be charged by any kind of light, starting from sunlight to light from a table lamp!

It’s pretty easy to charge the watches that receive all kinds of light. Even if there’s no sunlight, you can use artificial lights to completely recharge your watch. You can keep the watch facing upwards, in a lighted room. You watch will convert the photons attacking it into electrical energy, and store that electricity.

You can keep your watch close to a light source. In that way, the watch will receive more light. Now, of course, artificial lights aren’t as powerful as the sunlight. So, it’ll obviously take more time to fully charge your watch using artificial lights rather than the sunlight.

But, you can make your watch charge faster and in a more efficient way!

How to charge a solar watch fast?

High-power light sources can be used to focus the lights solely on the solar watch, but it can be very dangerous. The internal parts of watches are very delicate and over-powered light can heat them up, damaging them completely.

Putting the light source too close to the watch can also be harmful. The watch will receive too much light, leading to an increase in temperature, and it will be damaged. So, they should be within a reasonable distance from each other.

You can also use a soft light source to charge up your solar watch. Soft light sources produce relatively less heat and more lights, and these are a much more efficient way to charge your solar watch. You can also keep the source closer to the watch (but not too close), and the watch will recharge faster.

One of the best ways discovered until now, to charge your solar watch rapidly, is using the idea of a water bath! And it’s not even THAT complicated. You just need to keep your solar-powered watch in a translucent box and put that box in a translucent beaker containing cold water.

You can concentrate powerful light on the beaker, from a close range. This is a proficient and a safe method. That’s because the heat from the light source will be absorbed by the cold water. On the other hand, the light will easily reach the solar watch inside the box. So, you’re basically killing two birds with one stone!

How To Choose The Best Solar Watch

Reliability

The first important factor you have to keep in mind while purchasing a solar watch is its reliability. Reliability depends on two factors: the price and the brand.

Well-known and bigger watch companies will manufacture their watches using better materials than the smaller ones. They have a wider range of resources, and the materials are finely processed before being used to manufacture the watch. Thus, bigger companies will undoubtedly manufacture top solar watches, which are also very long-lasting and high-functioning.

Since the materials are of the finest quality, the price will naturally be higher too. But, you’re getting a much better functioning and long-lasting watch! You don’t have to spend on your watch anymore, and it can go on for as long as 10 years!

Overall Experience

A watch’s design may be world class; but, what if it’s not that comfortable to wear?

You should make sure that the watch you’ll be buying will fit on your wrists comfortably and won’t leave any pressure marks on your hand. You should make sure you like its texture and its looks. Before buying it, you must be aware of the traits of the watch and decide for yourself if it’s going to be the right one for you.

Your overall experience is really significant while buying your solar watch. If you don’t like the design, or if you don’t find comfort wearing it, there’s no point in buying it! You’ll eventually end up not wearing it anymore after a few days, which will be a total waste of your money.

Value for the money

Even though we mentioned earlier that a higher price will bring you a better watch, spending way too much money is not really sensible.

Learning about the characteristics of the watch, and the brand of the watch can be helpful as you can then judge if spending the money on the watch will be worth it. You can also compare the watches of different brands and their prices and choose the best one. A high-priced watch will certainly be a terrific one; however, you should also ensure that the watch is not rather overpriced, and has the required qualities and durability.

Power-save

The power-save feature can be very helpful for people who don’t spend much time under the Sun.

This feature helps to conserve more energy and makes the watch last days without being exposed to the sunlight. You also don’t have to be concerned about your watch stopping suddenly. The watches with this power-save feature has a large power reserve can store a lot of energy, so the watch has a better power supply than the other ones.

Design

This one is all about you and your likings. You should make sure that you like the texture, the color, and the other features of the watch.

There are endless designs of solar watches available nowadays. So, you have a wider range of choices. When you choose, you should make sure you can wear the watch with almost all kinds of outfit.

The design of the watch will attract the most attention to you, and others too. So, it’s essential that you go for a well-designed and good-looking watch, which you will actually wear regularly.

Can you close it easily?

Watches come with various kinds of clasps, making them harder or easier to close.

Some watches have complex methods which are really difficult for some people. You should check if the clasps are of good quality, and can be moved about easily. You should see if the clasp gets jammed sometimes.

This may seem useless, but it actually plays a part in you wearing the watch anymore. If opening and closing a watch is problematic, you’ll certainly become annoyed and stop wearing it after a few days.

How does it charge itself?

All solar watches charge themselves when a light is shed on them, whether it’s the sunlight or any other artificial lights.

Most solar watches charge themselves using sunlight.  There is also another kind of solar watches, which are becoming more and more popular. These are called hybrid watches, and these can charge efficiently using both sunlight and artificial lights. Although they charge faster under the sun, charging with artificial lights isn’t also that bad.

This trait is most necessary for the people living in areas that receive less sunlight. If you’re living somewhere where sunlight has low intensity, then choosing a solar watch with this characteristic is very important for you.

Solar Powered Waterproof Watches

Solar watches are for everyone, be it a construction worker or a person who works indoor all day or even people who love water skating. Divers, for example, can choose watches which have a high water resisting ability.

If you’re also planning to go scuba diving, you must make sure your solar watch has the maximum water resistance capabilities.  They must have an ISO-compliant water resisting ability up to 200 meters (20 ATM).  A water resistance capability less than that can turn out to be harmful to your watch.

The solar watch you purchase should be the one that you feel will give you the most comfort and has just the features you need. Also, you should consider the brand and the factors that will affect the performance of the watch. Last but not the least, although cheap solar watches are available, for a longer-lasting and high-functioning solar watch, you’ll have to pay a bit higher price. But hey! That’d be all you pay, and you can use your solar watch for ten years, even more!
